Yes, near Sioux City Iowa in the summer of 1986. I went to the airport for my flying lesson, which was postponed when the funnel cloud appeared. It was a thin wavy line that angled from the sky to the ground. We were all nervous, but excited at the same time; it seemed far enough away that we could get out of the path if necesary. Also, we couldn't hear the sound beacuse it wasn't that close. I watched it for maybe ten or fiifteen minutes.
Later that evening I drove around to see the aftermath. There was a billboard that was bent all the way to the ground. The area around the power plant was scattered with lumps of coal that had been blown all over the place.
The next day we went up in a little plane. The tornado had cut a brown path through the green corn fields; it looked kind of like a dirty high-traffic area on a green carpet.
I don't think anyone was injured by this one, if I remember correctly it pretty much missed any cities or towns.

I actually have seen two, though one was over water so i guess that's called a water-spout! The water spout was really cool because you could really see the shape of it because it was over the ocean (i was at NC coast on vacation) so visibility was good and also you could see the water in it. After it was over it just seemed to drop all the ocean water it had picked up. The regular tornado was just behind my house growing up but because of hills and trees all I could really see was the debris flying around (it actually looked like a flock of crows flying around) and the trees bent over. It made a really loud noise and shook the windows in and out of the house i was staying in and caused a lot of damage to parts of the county i lived in..

I saw one a feel years ago. It was only an F1 and most people stayed outside to look at it. I was struck by how much of the sky it took up. the cloud took up about 1/3 of the sky.

No I didn't see it but one blew through my neighborhood late at night. I got up and looked out the window to see flashes of lightening like a strobe light.. There were transformers blowing up and it looked like a war scene. Then in the morning there were trees all over the streets, and it took weeks to clean things up.. But I never saw it.

Yes. When I was living in Alberta. It was 1986. I think. I was the huge funnel perfectly from my kitchen window. We moved to the basement. It hit 2 km away from where I lived.

Oh yes, and they are so freaky! I've seen them from as close as 2 miles away and I wouldn't want to be any closer than that! It's like they're alive, all twisty and scary looking, but fascinating to watch!

No, but there was one that passed by my home one night. It was approximately 3 miles away. Sounded like a jet plane.

No, notwithstanding that's my dream to make certain one. they are unusually eye-catching. i must be the guy chasing the twister or observing it from the window. i ought to run in direction of the twister. Then if it were given too close i ought to run away.
