They are named alphabetically by the hurricane center before any storms arrive.
There are names for the Atlantic/Gulf Coast region(where Ernesto is now) and then there are different names for the Eastern Pacific(where Illeana was and John now is).

its true...
But the two hurricanes you are refering to is Illena and Ernesto....
Illena is a Pacific Ocean hurrican which has a different list of names while Ernesto is an Atlantic Ocean hurrican.

the two storms you mentioned are from two different oceans, therefor from two different lists of names. Ernesto is the 5th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, while Ileana is the 9th of the pacific season

First you start with A, then you go to every other letter (male to female) like: Allen, Candice, Earnesto THEN ONCE YOU GET TO THE LAST LETTER YOU TAKE THE LETTERS YOU MISSED on the first go around and start there with a male name like Basil, Denise, Falon. AFTER ALL LETTERS ARE COVERED YOU START WITH THE Greek Alphabet (not skipping letters): Alpha, Beta....
