This is how it works for my bricks i take water and wet it then take something sharp and scratch it . It works for mine i think it will work for yours

You could sand blast it or you could use a process called cryogenic blasting where it freezes the paint to about -200F and it just breaks off the brick because of the temperature difference. A little expensive but you will achieve the best results w/out fading the brick which sandblasting does. Someone painted your fireplace I bet huh

if it's outside, use a power washer. probably 3000psi will work - it depends on a type of paint. go to a local hardware store who rents them and ask them.

Inside I would say sand blasting.

you can try paint thinner, that might help. go to your nearest home improvement center and ask them. good luck
