never leave a job without another one already in place. If you respect this guy, and get another offer, ask him if he would be willing to match it. If not, leave for the better offer. Remember to take into account the taxes and travel expenses/time when thinking about the other offer. If he is a good & smart employer, he'll respect that you need to take whats best for you. If he's willing to match the offer you got, then you have other options.

If the job is off the books (i.e you are not paying taxes) then you shouldn't expect to get the minimum wage- or whatever the on-the-books rate is for any job. You are not having that huge chunk of $ going to the government so that comes at a price- and there is the convenience of not having a commute or other costly expenses.

That said, if you think the market rate is much higher then why not try to find an on-the-books job and take the extra money and be legal.

How long have you been his assistant? Do you like the job? Think of it as a free education/experience that you can put on your resume. Work for him for 6 months to 1 year and then move on. Sometimes the experience is worth much more than the pay that they are giving you.

You can use your off-the-books expierence here as the momentum to launch your own photography career. All you tell other studio owners is that you had some off-the-books training, helping a friend, but that you'd now like to make a career out of it.

Also, look into the Community College(s) in your area. Many will have short-term programs in that field.

Good luck

Can you get the best of both worlds - look for another job - keep this one but leave when offered a better job if one should arise. I have to say this guy is not good offering you BELOW the min wage. You sound capable and able at your job setting up etc - learn quickly? trust me lots of people like you are needed in the world! Confidence and pluck is your best qualification and if you believe in yourself others will too! Best of luck!!!!!

If you're working off the books, you are not an employee so you have no rights. Unless you are paying income taxes as a self-employed person you are also violating the law. You would do better to get a legitimate job.

Do you want to do photography? that the real question. Stick with it, maybe score a second part time job to make some extra cash. And make sure he will give you a good reference if you ever decide to move on into another photography business.

If its what you want to do in the future, stick with it. You could get one hell of a job soon. If not, maybe its time to move on. But keep getting paid at this place till you find a new job

How are you paying your bills? If this is your interest, I recommend continuing for on the job training as well as investigating education opportunities to increase your employability in this area. Then with your experience & education you can get a really good paying position in this area.

You should look for something better. Being off the books means that your job doesn't really offer you anything more than your paycheck and you could earn that much and more working at a fast food place

Personally if I were in your situation then yes I would leave ASAP. First of all, you're being paid LESS than your state's required minimum wage....that's not right! Second of all, you're not getting taxes taken out...that's gonna bite you in the butt when tax time rolls around cause you'll owe alot of money!
