Under the sub-heading "Washing Your Vehicle" is says: Do not use cleaning agents that are petroleum based, or that contain acid or abrasives". However, I just purchased a bottle of Rain Dance liquid wax and I noticed it contains Petroleum Distillates.

Are those two things the same? Is a car wax that contains Petroleum Distillates considered "Petroleum-based"? Does that mean I should not use this product on my brand new car?

Then again, I wondered, why would the maker of Rain Dance manufacture a product that would be harmful to any type of paint surface?

Anyway, your insights on this (those of you who are well versed in this subject) are very much appreciated. Thank you for taking a minute and have a pleasant Labor day weekend!

The correct answer is that you will be fine with the Rain Dance product....it is not a cleaning agent; it's a wax, and petroleum distillates are merely part of the formulation. What they mean by "cleaning agents" are actual petroleum-based solvents that can eat into the paint. Some types of "bug & tar remover" are solvents like this, and should be avoided...but the wax that you have will not harm the car's finish. Just be sure to follow the waxing instructions as directed.

Hope this helped.

I'm no expert but here is my thinking. Cleaning products with Petroleum will cut oil very well but can also damage the finish.

Wax like Rain Dance is probably trying to clean and wax. So it has just a bit of petroleum to break up the dirt and oil so when you buff the wax, the dirt will come off with the extra wax.

So it may be harmful to the cars finish, if you were using it every week.

My suggestion, I've always found it best to wash the car with a mild dish washing detergent. Then look for a wax that is just wax that is not trying to clean and wax at the same time.

But then again, if you only wax now and then and you like the quick and easy stuff, the Rain Dance probably isn't going to do that much damage.

It is fine to use the Rain Dance liquid wax. Though it does have petroleum products in its formulation, it is a finish protection and so has no solvent action. If you are in doubt still, I suggest that you open one of the car doors, and test a small spot in the door jamb. That way you won't affect the outer finish of the car if anything does happen to go wrong - the test patch is pretty well concealed. I'm sure you will have no problems with this product, I've used it with no issue.

RAin Dance WAX is not a CLEANING AGENT. And Distillates are not the same as an entire liquid that is petroleum based. (Like Goop, for instance. Goop is made for cleaning oil and grease off objects, but is terrible for your car's finish).

Rain Dance made the item that way on purpose. You're fine.
