You probably can't. Unless there is some sort of sensor in the cartridge, even the printer doesn't know. It can only guess based on what has been printed.

One way to know is when you try printing in that color and nothing comes out, it is a good possibility the cartridge is empty.

you can't, even the ink monitor has no idea how much ink is left. It is pretty much a page counter.

When the print starts fading you have about 3 pages left, that is a fairly general rule for HP and Lexmark. And Epson brother or canon will just stop printing when the printer thinks one tank is out of ink.

This may sound like an ad but I've found that all HP (Hewlett Packard) printers come with software which show you exactly how much ink there is left for printing(whether black/white or color).Once registered these printers are a fabulous addittion to any system. They'll warn you if your running out of ink and the company also provide you with driver updates while you are online.I'm running a HP F380-All in ONE,and it's brilliant(scanner/copier/fax etc.).This cost me AUD $79.00/US$45.00-49.00,a real bargain.Once again sorry if this seems like an ad but it's well worth telling the community about!.

Best thing is to have spare cartridges on hand and only change them when printed material comes out dim. If you go by the antimated level gauge you will most likely waste 10-30% of the ink!

Go to your printer set up and go to properties, it will tell you how much of the ink has been used.
