try taking your kids around to relatives and close friends. that way they get safe candy and lots of ooos and ahhs "aren't they cute." try a harvest festival, something sposered by a church or community center in your area. or do a family get together with a bon fire and roast hot dogs and marshmallows.apple cider, hot chocolate and lots of old fashion games. sounds like a plan to me. let me know when & where lol.

Samhain,, it's the pagan holiday Halloween is derived from.
Except it is more like a harvest festival celebrating the place between life and death (fall) none of the evil scary theme you see today. Lots of fun food like candied apples and pies, generally a big feast. Music friends, a time to celebrate loved ones who have past on and beginings of new life. Much better than letting your kids run amuck in the dark taking candy from strangers.
Early Christians tried to give it the "evil" spin to make it less appealing and ease the conversion from the old religion to Christianity. It obviously didn't work people just continued celebrating and the result is the holiday you see today.
P.S. I absolutley LOVE HALLOWEEN I was jus providing the alternative you asked for,, I dress up with my kids, and run amuck. But we stick to our neighborhood (people we know). After that, we get a sitter and the wife I attend a late night grown-ups only costume party. FUN, FUN, FUN !

My family always celebrates Halloween, but my best friend as a child did not. Instead her family would plan a big Fall/Harvest Party. Kids could bob for apples, paint gords and mini pumpkins, and her Grandfather would give a hay ride. This might be an idea you could do with your kids' friends and their families. Don't concentrate on Halloween, but on Harvest fun!! I hope you and family can enjoy this time of year!!

We did not celebrate Halloween and neither did the other children in our church. Our church held a harvest festival each year on Halloween night. There was plenty of food, games, candy, and a hay ride. I think we had a better time than the kids going around asking for candy.

Most of the small towns around me sponsor a Fall Festival -- the kids (and adults too!) can dress up in costume, have a good time in a safe environment and it is NOT halloween (just near it).

I know of one school that has the children dress as famous historical figures. Before Halloween, they do research and a presentation on their famous person.

i work at a childcare center and instead of having a Halloween party we have a harvest day party; the children dress up, we encourage them to come in "professional" costumes , we celebrate fall and harvest time.

I don't let my kid collect candy but I do dress him in a custom and take pictures. I also invite his friends over for a very small halloween party just with some jello, milk and chocolate cake.

Its not the children that don't celebrate Halloween...Its the lame mom and dads that won't let them. Oh its evil. Oh my child is too good for such a common activity. It might hurt them emotionally!
I'll bet you HOME SCHOOL too.
Halloween can be a fun activity for children. Notice ...FUN
The few parents I know that don;t do Halloween are all stuck on them selves and their position in the community.(what they do is so good-what you do is bad.
