NO!!! DO NOT GIVE THEM LETTUCE!!!! You can pretty much give horses anything else BUT lettuce!!! MIne are partial to Whinney's Cookies - a horse treat that you can purchase in pretty much any tack or feed store, oats, molasses - the cookie versions of these ingredients are a great snack for horses, too! They also like apples, sugar cubes, carrots, my horses LOVE graham crackers...none of my horses like pears, but yours might...my horses also like an occasional warm gingerbread...lol. They're spoiled - but they also work, too!

Do Horses Eat Lettuce

"Vegetables are another source of vitamins and minerals for adding an extra boost to your horse’s diet, as well as adding variety to his palate. Besides carrots, Dr. Basko suggests beet greens, sweet potato greens, and plantain. Celery, peas, lettuce, and green beans are other vegetables to try. Some horses tend to be more cautious at first with vegetables because the sweetness is not there as it is in the fruits. After a little persuasion, however, many will try the vegetable (and like it too)! "

From what I researched, the very little I got due to the filter not getting me what I want per say, it is common to give horse lettuce.

Lettuce (depending on the brand and type) don't have a lot of nuitriants and our bodies don't break down it either. I would imagine horse's stomachs also has the option of either being able to break it down or not.

I would be careful about how much a horse consumes of related fruits and veggies outside their basic diet. some horses can have allergies to certain plants/fruit/veg and cause a major reaction. Some plants have high acid that can cause ulcers, stomach problems and sometime cause bowl irritations.

yes horses can eat lettuce,
as well as carrots, apples, breads, (this includes crackers)
i would not let them have oranges or tomato's though, the high acid content is not good on there belly's.
the best treats to give your horse are horse treats that can be got at your local feed store or even at wal-mart.
I use this treats also as a training a, giving them one from my hand when they have done exceptionally well with a task.
these treats are sweet but low in sugars that will hipe a horse up.
if at first they do not want them slide one nto the side of there mouth and hold your hand over there lips so they have to chew it, the horse will know what it is the next time you offer it and will take it from your hand if you place it in the alm and hold you hand out flat under there nose.( keep you fingers together, the horse might otherwise mistake you finger for the treat.)

Well I am sure that they can...whether or not they will enjoy it is the question. Horses love carrots, apples, and peppermints, even licorice. Actually if you have a pill you must give to a horse, the best way is to shove it into a piece of apple and they will gobble it up. Hope this helps - try the lettuce and let us know what you find out.

I had always heard that horses were picky with what they ate, but mine aren't. Their favorites are Ritz crackers, wheat crackers, ginger snaps, popcorn, and watermelon!
I even have a mare that has eaten dog food , she was grazing in our dog yard and just started eating it!
I don't know of any damaging properties of lettuce so you ought to try or maybe not.....the member above me might have a reason why not to give it lettuce!
Apples, and carrots are also a favorite!!

i used to work on this farm that had three draft horses. well every morning i had a 20 oz bottle of mello yello and one of the draftys kinda got a taste for it and figured out how to tip the bottle up and drink out of it. lettuce would probably be alright just give it to them in small portions to start with and see if they like it. where i live we have alot of amish families and ive seen them feed brussel sprouts to horses for weeks on end. the only side effect was that the horses were a little potent when pulling the wagons.

i'm sure they can have a little bit. just as a small treat. not as a meal. i offered my horse some and she didin't want it. she is pretty picky though. they like apples and carrots better. i'm sure apples and carrots are better for them then lettuce too.
