I need to type a essay in french so I need Microsoft word to be in french also.

try to use "Regional and Language Options"
1) Open your "Control Panel"
2) Click on "Regional and Language Options"
3) On the dialog box, choose the French Language, and then restart the system.

You would need to have Microsoft Word french language installed to be sure that the spelling and grammar is corrected properly.
If you have it (even if you're not sure) try in the toolbar (where you have file, edit etc...)
Tools > Language > Set Language and select french.

You can't do that, however you can change your global settings
Control Panel > Regional & Language Options
Change it to french...

goto microsoft.com and search using key word "local language"/change language.
