a scan will tell you for sure. it will also tell you what kind of virus it is which is important because different viruses do different things and take different ways to get rid of. but you can usually tell you might have a virus by the way your computer is behaving. if it is having trouble running programs, it shuts off randomly, or really anything out of the ordinairy - then you might have a virus. but a scan will tell you for definite. even if you think you have a virus, what are you going to do about it without the software to clean it up? you can't just delete the virus. it protects itself against that.

If you want to go on the internet without an antivirus program, you may as well dump your PC now and save some aggravation later.

You will know when it is infected when the PC starts acting screwy. I hope you have a good antivirus program, like McAfee or Norton, and update it and run it frequently (underline frequently). Keep it on automatic update. If you are in WinXP keep the firewall on.

One way is to look a the list of processes that running in the background. If there are allot of "unknown or questionable" processes (ones with strange files extensions or characters such as &!$|) that would be a good start.

I would suggest a good AV program like AVG (free version is nice) to make sure.

Good luck ...
