As with any sport, good equipment will help your game. It's not going to make a bad player good, but it will allow you to better exhibit your skills. Especially important are the skates, since skating is obviously a huge part of the game.
I'd say do it, without question.

Unless you're seven, and can't lift the puck off of the ice, good equipment will make a difference. I would love to say that good equipment is just a marketing device to rip you off and you will still be fine with a wooden stick and old skates, but I can't. Hockey companies are taking equipment seriously and new equipment is really adavanced. Protective gear is now safer, more comfortable and allows for more maneuverability. The new sticks are lighter, stronger and allow for much better shots. Triple A hockey is a big deal, so I say, but new equipment.
Now you don't have to make your parents broke by buying the most expensive stuff. Do a little research online and find good stuff that isn't that expensive and web-sites (fit in stores, but buy online) that sell equipment at discounted prices.

If you take hockey seriously; for example.. if you hope to some day apply for a college hockey scholarship, etc.. by all means ... invest in excellent equipment!!
Good fitting skates, a stick sized exactly for you, and perfect fitting gloves will only enhance your game.
Going to hockey swaps is a great way to purchase or trade gear at greatly reduced prices. I always give that a try before plunking down full price at sport's stores

when you have reached a level like you say you have getting better equipment is what helps get more detailed in what or how you control yourself on the ice. New skates means lighter, faster and more control for the person who is advanced. I new stick with the right flex would help make the shot you have a little easier or faster to make. New pads are always good since new designes and styles are making them lighter yet more protective.

Good equipment means better protection. A nice stick may improve your shot. If your equipment does not fit then getting good equipment will make you a better hockey player.

My son is a travel gold goalie..... good equipment is always a better fit and better protection.....you don't have to pay alot to get good stuff. Do your research.....check message boards at the local rink for used equipment. Find the top brands at the stores and get a proper fit....then go online and find them cheaper. I have bought on ebay and saved a bundle.....also, try hockeymonkey.com. you can get the top of the line for less there and save even more if you look for the discounted pprice on new items left over from last year.

I think AAA will come and give you a tow if your car breaks down. I don't know about hockey though.
