sometimes, That would considered a "drag pipe" It most states. they are illegal.Louder and no sound deadner, does not make a more powerful motor.Pipes are tuned for performance. The bends, the length and amout of required back-pressure,is all taking in consideration for performance.Screeming Eagle, for example, can have loud sound AND great performance. The reduction of packing and baffels are what makes a pipe louder.Again,if you have a bike with "nothing inside" be forewarned, police will sometimes insert a rod inside your pipes to see if you are running "stripped pipes".Just go with a high performance pipe, have it tuned to to your carb.

For harleys yeah mostly. After market systems for sport bikes have a straight thru baffle with packing, where the stock can tends to be a mechanical baffle with turns in it. Loud may not be better for power, alot of the time staight pipes give the illusion of more power because it screws up the power curve making it lower in one place with a bigger step sowewhere else. Of course loud pipes is mostly look at me aint I neat.

Sometimes that is the case with custom built bikes but most of the time aftermarket exhausts are just less restrictive than the stock ones.
Some have baffles you can add and remove to really fine tune the air/fuel mix (adding baffles actually makes it louder and less restrictive).

I Have a Devil 'Double Tuning' end cans on my '02 CBR6, the cans are just to get the pressures right to aid the flow of gases out of the engine, so have no baffles at all- sounds wicked, and is deafening, but i've been pulled 3 times and every copper's loved it!!!!!
