There is no root of evil. Good and evil are value judgements. What is good to one person is evil to another. As humans, we have instincts for compassion and competition.

From a humanistic standpoint, there are things that support society and some things that tend to go against a healthy society. As societies evolve, they tend to promote those things that keep them going, otherwise they don't survive. Lots of societies have come and gone. There are many artifacts of old societies that don't work well in modern ones.

Interestingly, some of the bad things for society are good for it. There has to be some churning over of ideas and attitudes that keeps a society going. If a society stagnates, it tends to become less viable. New cultural norms come from past counter-culture.

If I had to pick a "root of all evil", then, it would have to be stagnation.

The root of all evil is emotion... Remember the movie "Equilibrium"? They portrayed a very good example of the role of emotion creating great evil. But it also showed that emotion is still good on some aspects. Although this assumption exists, I still say, emotion is still the root of all evil. Take note that this is only a simple answer to your question. It does not really mean that emotion must be abolished in any way possible, it's just that, emotion causes evil to exist.

Well... Nietzsche saw nihilism as the valuation of one thing unconditionally above all else. On that definition, I'd say nihilism is the world's biggest problem today. Some of the common things unconditionally valued by various groups and individuals are money, religion, and power. If people were to consider these things both more rationally and more compassionately they would not allow themselves to get so carried away. Hollywood might make decent movies again, musicians would be treated as artists rather than revenue-making machines, religious wars and conflicts would be few and far between, politicians would care about the welfare of their constituencies, and the flow of money from government into the pockets of special interest groups would stop.
