... she'd say 'Don't you cry or I'll give you something to cry about!'

At that point she'd ALREADY given me something to cry about.

It probably sucked--but there are worse things.

That seemed to be a favourite term used at one stage.Hi I too have 3 daughters, now my eldest is 24, but I think as a generilasation parents didn't always know or have the coping skills,as we still don't.We have the babies & then go blindly into the most important job in the world.I am not condorning parental hitting,as there are other ways of being able to deal with problamatic issuesEG:crying. But sometimes it is through their own frustrations that hitting or other behaviour ,or other reasons that maybe going on in the home that a parent will hit a child.Sometimes it gets passed down through generations as a way of dealing with a problem,as it may be the only way they know how.You sound a bit upset about this issue,as you have every right to,just a suggestion, have you asked your mum as to why she felt she had to resort to that, this could be a pathway towards your own pain& healing. As adults ,speaking from my own experiences,we carry alot of baggage from when we are younger,& when this baggage starts to hurt, or inhibit our thoughts we really need to address the source from where the pain/hurt started from.I cannot go into specific details as i don't know you,but I empathise with you, but I also believe we are resposible for our own healing at times, when we cannot forget something ,or rationalise it as adults.Your mum could have had many reasons for hitting you,not that you need to excuse this, but find out the reason, or problems she may have been going through at the time. She is human too,and my guess is that she really didn't want to hit you, but didn't have the coping skills at the time.Talking things through can sometimes help as I can only (suggest)but if you choose not to, bring the healing that you deserve in your life to be able to deal what you are feeling at the moment.Thats'your right of pasage.

I was slapped sometimes too when I was a kid and it really hurt my feelings. I think parents say "don't cry or I'll give you something to cry about" because they feel guilty when they see your tears and they want to justify the reason you were spanked in the first place. Odds are that your mom was disciplined the same way and she felt it was the best way to punish at the time. Parents are not perfect and overwhelming circumstances cause them to lash out and at times overreact. It's sad remembering punishments, but you need to find it in your heart to forgive and know that your mom really did love you.

your mom sounds like she was young and stupid at the time. (no offense, most people are with their first child.) i bet it took her a while to calm down.

sorry, but they dont give out instructions to new parents. You would think that by now the government would give out a pamphlet or something, since they have one for everything else.

no one is perfect and some people resort to force when they cant solve their problems any other way.

Sorry to have to disillusion you but your mum beat you because you are a bad person, simple as that. Stop being a stupid petulant child with a chip on your shoulder and grow up. At least you were not sexually abused as i was.
