Secrets.

Assuming, (as you said) you already understand the term, “coming out of the closet” then I will put my answer to our question of what do you put in it as simply the answer secrets. For you see, those who “come out of the closet” is a saying used (as you should already know) to describe homosexual males or females who finally reveal their sexuality publicly. When they finally tell someone such as a friend, family member or other, then they tell their hidden secret of being gay or lesbian. That is why those who are not “out” to the public are called in the closet – and sometimes referred to as on the DL (down low).

Therefore, you wanted to know what do you put in the closet, and the answer is anything that is a secret. Plus, keep in mind that although the focus on homosexual lifestyles has made the term popular, it was already originally used to describe secrets. Are you familiar with the saying, “skeletons in your closet”? This is just the original phrasing for when a person had a secret that was unknown to others; it is just modified slightly today.

Society sends negative signals to homosexuals. Young gays fear rejection. Also, it is not like we are born with instruction manuals and automaticly know we are gay and what it all means. Someone might have a talent to be an artist or a mechanic - but they have to use that talent and act on their urges to use that talent or it will never be discovered. It might take a gay person years before they can come to terms with being gay or even figure out that they might be gay.

When someone is hiding the fact that they are gay it's call "in the closet". When you stop hiding it, and let it be known that you are gay then it's called "coming out of the closet".

Fear generally. Fear of being different. Fear of those who attack you for being different. Fear of losing family and others that you love. So you hide.

That is both the advantage and the disadvantage of being gay -- one can hide and thus avoid some of the worst of abuse if one wants, and, you are different from your parents. So there is no natural support structure. It is, for most gay bois, a great struggle. For some of us who did come from supportive homes, not so much.

Kind thoughts,

Reyn
