The Mazda Tribute is an overall good quality Midsized SUV for it's price. It uses the same engine and same platform as the Ford Escape, incase you were thiking of putting one of those into consideraton.
With the Tribute you get 2 engine options the GX Inline 4 and the GX,GS,GT V6. With the GX-I4 you get a decent 153bhp and 152ft/lbs of torque. With the V6 you get a more comfortable and more usable 200bhp and 193ft/lbs of torque.
I would recommend the AWD system as opposed to the FWD system for snow or heavy rain, and any off roading you might plan to do in the future.
If you're looking into a Manual you won't be able to get it with the V6, unfortunately they only made it available with the I4, so you have to compromise.
You get quite a bit of cargo space with the Tribute. Enough to hold most of what you might need to go on a camping trip if you fold down the rear seats.
I myself wouldn't mind having one but for roughly the same price as a V6 model AWD youcan get a base Nissan Pathfinder which provides worlds more comfortability, space and luxury. If not you can also try a Nissan X-Trail or the Subaru Outback. I'd pick the Subaru, quality and the Symetrical AWD system are worth it.

The Mazda is a basically a rebadged Ford Escape, as has been stated. Mazda has given the Tribute a little more glitz by adding more chrome, etc. so there is some styling differences. From what I understand the Escape is one of the most popular compact SUVs. I think you would be making a very good choice with the Tribute or the Escape.

Well the Ford Escape is the same vehicle as the Tribute, as also the Mercury Mariner (which I have). The Mazda for some reason has a extra year in its warranty - but the Ford has an availible hybrid engine option that I dont think that the Mazda offers yet. Great little truck and they dont suck on gas. Good luck to you, and yes they are very popular little trucks and well built.

Mazda Tribute is basically Ford Escape with Mazda badge. It's car-based SUV with good ride (a bit noisy engine though). AWD works good on snow, I like interior - roomy and comfortable. May be it's not as reliable as Toyota RAV4, but is fairly good. Excellent size - it's not too small and not too bulky. Take it for a test drive, see if you like it, it's a good car for money. 4WD model with manual transmission gets 22/26 MPG

You'd be better off getting a GMC Envoy or a Subaru Outback.
Mazda Tribute/Ford Escape are basically the same and are lackluster SUV.

The 6 cyl 2 wheel drive starts at about $23,000
Personally I would buy a Hybrid Escape, which starts at about $26,000 & you would get a $2600 tax break from federal & may also have state tax incentives as well as less maintenance & fuel savings.
I sell Fords & I've driven the Hybrid & done all the math...
Tribute-Mariner-& Escape are all the same basic vehicle with cosmetic & trim level differences.
They are all fun to drive, great vehicles & great values, but I would definatly choose the Hybrid Escape for BEST VALUE.

I have an 05, and love it! They are twin body to the ford and mercury, as others have said, but in addition to better looking touches, they have some mechanical components that are manufactured apart from the Ford. Consumer Reports won't rate it because of difficulties with the Ford twin to it, but independent reviews are great for it. I know a few other people with Tributes, also, and I haven't met anyone yet who doesn't like it. The extended warranty and incentives make it a great purchase, and I couldn't be more pleased with mine.
