Was going to say JRR Tolkein until I saw someone mention Deric Longdon.

Tolkeins work is so descriptive its easy to imagine his worlds.

The Cat Who Came in From the Cold is probably my most favourite and well read book I read it about 2-3 times a year it'll really cheer you up.

Stephen King. Have read almost everything. Also like Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs. Stephen King doesn't just do obvious outright gore. A lot of his books are normal, everyday scenarios. Much scarier! Derry, Maine is a place i will NEVER visit!!!!!

Isaac Asimov is my favorite author. Not only was he great at science fiction (The Foundation series, I' Robot, etc) but he wrote so many non fiction books also dealing with almost anything from astronomy and extraterrestrial life to religion And he wrote his articles and books with wit and was easy to understand.

I like humour and cats, so Deric Longden's 'The Cat Who Came In From The Cold' is a side-splitter for me - along with other titles he's written which wil reduce you to tears both of laughter and empathy.
