The boiler feed water is de-mineralised water.

if ordinary water is fed into a boiler, in the boiler tubes scaling will result, reducing the steam flow through it.

So ordinary water is passed through what are known as cation ,anion and mixed bed filters to remove the minerals. This mineralised water when used in the boiler will not form scales and thus prolong the life of boiler tubes.

The water for boilers should first be pure and then u impute a basic material. If the boiler water turns acid even a slight bit it will gut your boiler.

Treated fresh water is fed into boiler by feed pumps. This water is converted in to steam. The steam generated is used for many purposes like heating,to run steam engine,to run cargo pumps etc and returns to feed water tank after cooling.Again pumped in to boiler.Any water or steam loss is compensated. To avoid corrosion the water is treated chemically.

I work part-time for a laundry and cleaners supply store and we sell something that is called boiler feed. It actually cleans the boiler and is used to generate steam (mainly for dry cleaners).
