RK...Mississippi didn't have levees break. They also had their requests for aid answered. The Mayor of NO and the Govn'r of LO both placed requests for Federal aid days before the hurricane...and were ignored. Food, water, and aid were turned away from NO by FEMA in the days following the hurricane. The Federal money slated for Mississippi actually arrived, while a large chunk of the money slated for LO was given to Halliburton...for doing nothing...in a no-bid contract.
BTW, Did anyone else hear the comment that Barbara Bush made about the people from NO that were in the AstroDome in TX (where several people died and everyone was living in their own waste and starving)? "Most of these people were underpriviliged anyway...this is a real step up for them" and "These people don't feel pain like we do".

First of all, as a resident of this Lousy state of Louisiana, I watched TV when Nagin was telling people to leave, and that was four days before Katrina hit. Then the day before, he changed his mind. Blanco and Nagin are responsible for all those deaths. FEMA is NOT a primary response agency. That is why you have fire, ems, and police. For some reason, I think it was said no air conditioning in the school buses, they let all those buses flood that could have carried many more to safety.
Yes, levies broke, and areas flooded. That happened 29 years ago with Camille and the state didnt learn, and prepare for the future.

Everyone forgets the four storms that slammed Florida the year before. That state has a plan, and it works. The first thing they tell you is have a 10 day supply of water and food which will last until help arrives. No one in New Orleans did that, cause they expect everyone else to help them.
Mississippi had as bad a damage, without all the levey breaking, and they took charge and began the recovery and look where they are at. People in New Orleans still sitting there with their hands out wanting more, and not doing anything to help fix the problem
All the media focused on was New Orleans. Not much on Buloxi, Gulf Port, Cameron, Holly beach or any other areas that Katrina and Rita hammered. I guess those other people dont count do they??
I feel sorry for the lose of life and my company was on the front lines for two weeks, helping, giving medical treatment, water and food. The first rule in survival is help yourself first.

What did everyone think about the Discovery channel specials on Hurricane Katrina??
Pitiful,just pitiful.
To have certain citizens of the USA reduced to
third world status is unacceptable.
The gross inhumanity was stunning to me.

Didn't see it, but I'm getting tired of hearing SO much about New Orleans and the implied ineptitude of Bush, and so LITTLE about Mississippi, which was devastated just as badly but has picked itself up rather nicely.
The whole thing is a study in the philosophical difference between Republicans and Democrats.
In N.O., you had a Dem mayor and a Dem governor who bungled the evacuation and rescue/recovery efforts at every stage. And their only response is "What can the government do FOR me?"
In Miss, you had a Republican governor who led the affected part of his state (mostly) back to normal and instead asked himself "What can we do for ourselves?"
These same Dems and liberals who are crying about the feds' response to Katrina ... are the SAME people who want government to run our health-care system? NO THANKS!

I watched bits and pieces, and some of it had me in tears. We went thru Rita, and I can sympathize, but I don't think any of us went thru all THAT! My heart went out to the lady whose baby was limp from the heat. She was having a hard time waking him up. Others died! These hurricanes put people in animalistic conditions. Imagine being trapped. And it didn't matter if you had a million dollars in your back pocket. It was a survival, and none of us will ever forget it.
