Hi,
is there any way to change a usb 2.0 to fuction as a 1.1?
cause i recently bought a samsung YP-U2J mp3 player, and when i connect it to a modern pc with usb 2, it wont detect it as a usb device, it detects it as a separate "device", which places limits to what I can do. For instance, i cannot make new folders directly or view files directly (i need to copy and paste them into my pc).
But, when i connect it to a usb 1.1 with my old pc, it works just fine like a regular usb key.
so, i want to see if there is any way i could somehow change one of the ports to function as usb 1.1; that way maybe i can do w/e i want.

USB 2.0 is supposed to be backward compatible with 1.1. Did you install the proper drivers for both the USB port and your device?

Try the following:
Go into the control panel
Click on the system icon
Select the Hardware tab
Open the Device Manager
Scroll down near the bottom of the hardware catagories and find USB Devices
Click on the + sign in front to expand the listing to show all the USB devices
Right click on and uninstall every device in the USB listing
Reboot the PC and it will reinstall all the USB devices
This will clear out any information in the registry that it has stored about you player (or any other USB devices you have ever attached to the PC)
Now plug the player back in and it should make a fresh reinstall of the device's drivers. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

If not, check the Samsung website to see if they have an updated driver for the device. It is probably not the USB 2.0 vs USB 1.1 that is the problem. It is probably a different driver install on the new PC than the old PC.

Well, I won't call it a silly question, but a USB 2.0 is backward compatible. So if you have a USB2.0 connection, it will cover all products designed for 1.1. In terms of devices, usually any mass storage device is listed as a seperate device. I don't really get this old computer works fine new one doesn't because we have no other details. But that doesn't seem to be the problem. Maybe you are using something else to format the device on the old comp that you don't have on the new one.

And seriously, copy pasting isnt that much effort. If its not broken, don't fix it.

Not another answer. But a comment in the other answers. Not ALL devices that work on USB 1.1 will work on USB 2.0. I have a VRM audio interface made by focusrite that does not function on anything but 1.1

Most PC equipment is backward compatible to 1.1. So, attach your mp3 with a standard 1.1 cable.

It is possible your "new" PC may have a glitch in it. Try a different usb port also.
