the red sox are below 500 vs the americal league, they are 27-3 vs the NL and Baltimore, and like 11 games below 500 vs the rest of the American league. They dont have the pitching. The race is to tight in the central with the tigers, twins, and white sox, one of those three will get the wild card. dont forget the red sox are 8-18 in the month of aug. worst record in august out of any team, tampa bay even has a better record. time for red sox fans to start sayin "maybe next year" because they are not going to the playoffs this year

The Sox have a ton of injuries, a literal ton.
Nixon's out... although not great when he's around.
Tek's out... although having a horrible year, he still calls a great game and helps those pitchers.
Wake, Lester, Clement, DiNardo all hurt... although Clement is a bum and Lester/DiNardo probably aren't ready yet... and will never be Greg Maddux and Roy Oswalt when they are.
Now Manny felt left out so he invented an injury, and Ortiz has his irregular heartbeat (Funny that that's one of the side effects from HGH use).
The Yanks lost Matsui and Sheff for most of the year, along with Pavano and Tanyon Sturtze. Mussina, Cano, Giambi, Damon, Posada, Farnsworth, Dotel, Cairo and A-Rod have all missed time with injuries over the course of the season, but they've handled these things a little better than Boston's been able to.
I guess that must be the extra $70M worth of payroll at work.
Boston's out of the playoff picture this year. And sadly, unless that front office makes some shrewd moves and opens the wallet a little bit more, there might not be a post season next year either.
Problem is that the guys they need to dump are still under contract. Free agents after this year are Alex Gonazales, Alex Cora, Keith Foulke, Mark Loretta, Trot Nixon and Javy Lopez.
Loretta will likely be re-signed. Beyond that, they should all go.
It'll amount to about $20M worth of savings, but replacing a shortstop and a left fielder with quality players will gobble that up. Which likely means more re-treads in the bullpen and no help for the starting rotation.

Nope, here's why: They are actually 6 out of the Wild Card, and falling fast. Manny is out, so is Ortiz. They have a guy named Pedroia in their starting lineup. Plus, winning the Wild Card would mean getting past Minnesota and the ChiSox, both who are teams that are way better than the Red Sox. The Red Sox still have a funky schedule going. They have to play 8 games against Toronto, 3 against ChiSox, 3 against the Yanks, and 3 more after that against the Twins.
They have maybe a 2% chance of making it, but that only happens if the baseball gods strike a curse on the MVP candidates except Ortiz and they end up going without a hit for the rest of the year, allowing the Red Sox to miraculously leapfrog into 1st in the Wild Card, and this would probably be the only scenario in which Ortiz wins the MVP, because unfortunately, even though he is the 2nd best hitter (Ryan Howard same HRs, more RBIs), the fact that they will end up so far out of the playoff hunt will hurt his chances GREATLY.
So yeah, they won't make it.

The recent Yankees' sweep was proof that the Red Sox have almost no good pitching, including both the starting rotation and the bullpen. With the losses of Varitek, Ortíz, and Ramírez (similar to the Yankees' losses of Sheffield and Matsui early on), Boston has almost completely fallen out of postseason contention.
If you look closely enough, THE RED SOX HAVE A LOSING RECORD (55-57) AGAINST AMERICAN LEAGUE TEAMS OVER THE ENTIRE SEASON!
Seven games out of the A.L. East, six games out of the Wild Card.
The odds are about 100-1.

They are actually 6 games out and they are highly unlikely to make playoffs with ortiz, manny, lester, nixon, varitex, wakefield, etc. the yankees sustained injuries to two great outfielders and the red sox lost two even better hitters but now look at the lineups yankees still have damon, arod(slumping),giambi for hitting the home runs but now who do the red sox have?? loretta batting 3rd 4hr??? youkilis batting cleanup??? all in all the yankees have a lot more depth

I think the fat lady is singing on top of the Green Monster for this season. The Red Sox have just too many injuries to key player which will keep them out of the playoffs this year.

How do you expect to catch the Twins when your pitching staff is decimated, your catcher is still on the mend, and your big Papi just lost his heart (beat)???
It was bad before that news. Your team has the worst record in the majors over the last month. It's true. Look it up. Your schedule gets harder from here on out.
You can't do it. Accept it. Think about next year, and how you're going to replace Manny Ramirez.

I don't know yet. I'm not sure if I'd rather see the Mets beat the Sox in the World Series or the Yankees in a Subway series.
