I hate cooling problems. The cooling system is rather simple in a car...just a pain in the butt to deal with. It could be your water pump is going out and not pumping enough coolant through your system. Your thermostat could be stuck closed. You could have a blockage in your coolant system somewhere.

Potential cooling problems..
Thermostat Stuck close
water pump
blocked radiator
car running excessively rich on fuel/air ratio
low oil level in sump causing extra shear force while driving
towing something
Air-lock in cooling system.
brakes dragging
absurd wheel alignment problem
This is what i can think of at the moment.... However, being a 1991 car, i would reckon very basic coolant circulation problem... have it flushed and replace all hoses, clamps, thermostat and water pump.

In my old '91 Tempo, the cooling fan was not coming on when it should have been, and I ended up blowing up the radiator because the car over-heated. The ignition switch (not the lock and tumblers) but the contacts in the switch itself were not touching and the fan relay was not getting power when the ignition switch was turned on. Double-check to see if your fan is working when the car gets hot.

coolant may be fine but your thermostat could be bad. It's the easiest and cheapest thing to replace. If that doesn't fix it, then you may need a new water pump

Usually what happens is that you have some sort of problem with your fan or your radiator. Usually it's the fan that;s not working properly or your radiator may have a leak or it's a leaky hose somewhere. I'd start from there and see what happens.

do you have electric fans on it, ifso when you cut the car off do these fans come on. if not then you may want to have them or it checked out. also if you have a regular bladed fan hooked to your water pump. they come with what you call a clutch fan. that's what the blades connect too. take your fingers and spin the fan on it. if it free wheels pretty easily then it is wore out and needs replacing. any other questions feel free to email me.

likely the fan is not turning on
to check, drive like a mile, (if you have a temp gauge, until its gets to the middle)
stop, open the hood, see if the fan is turning
if not , may need fan, fuse, sensor, etc.
if fan turns, could be pump, thremostat
good luck

Try changing the thermostat. It's pretty easy to do, and if it doesn't work, they're inexpensive so you're not out too much.
