I mean, as a South African, this category is where I belong. However, I'm not good at speaking and understanding Afrikaans. Most of the questions and answers in this category now come up in Afrikaans. In that case I really have to shut up - No choice. Have I got any chance to make all of you shift back to English language...perhaps?

I must agree with Diesel, not because I am not 100% competent in Afrikaans, I am - and Diesel not bad, except it is "geleer"...

However, the rules of this site (as stated in "community guidelines") are that we communicate in English and if you do not keep to these rules most of the time, you risk being reported and that in turn could lead to you being banned from the site.

Let's all keep to the rules and let everyone understand what we are talking about on this site, which is afterall an international site - and not a SA one, so the 11 languages rule do not apply here.

I agree with you Diesel... You don't have to speak Afrikaans to be a proud and true South African (so shut up chucky)... Does it mean just because I can't speak Zulu or Swahili or whatever that I'm not a true South African? NO it does not ! As long as you can admit that you are South African and not ashamed about it it is alright with me that you cannot speak and understand Afrikaans very well ! En jou Afrikaans was nie baie erg gewees nie (Your Afrikaans wasn't too bad)... I think that it will be cool to write the questions and answers in English and if you really want to - write the same thing over again in Afrikaans - that way we can accommodate al South Africans !

You're absolutely right Diesel!! This is an English site and we are not obeying the rules! We have to all talk English although there are 11 official languages in South Africa, you must realise that not all of us can speak every language and we all have different languages! I agree with you, Diesel and i think it is good that you have told us this!

No more Afrikaans!!

Kim :)

As said, South Africa's got 11 official languages.

I'm Afrikaans, but my Afrikaans sucks (that's what you get from being around Australians so much!).

So I also ignore the Afrikaans ones if they look too confusing, I mean basic things are Okay, but the whole post typed in Afrikaans, hmm..

Diesel it just like in South Africa, every language group feels that they have superiority over others and thus refuse to speak anything else. :-) Don't get used to it as Diablo says...

Chucky... am i a fake south african because i dont speak afrikaans?.. thats a very rash and stupid thing to say.

Ask your questions in whichever language you are comfortable with, dont allow others to push you away from this category!

HAHA I love this place..even in CYBERSPACE South Africans whine & whinge about which language & which one to use, common sense is not so common?
As Somebody said ENGLISH is the LANGUAGE of YAHOO ANSWERS therefore English is the answer.
Anybody wanting to communicate in one of the other languages do it in another forum - may I sugest create a yahoogroup for South African Quetions & answers - it will likely need to be moderated as it could get heated haha.
NOw lets get back to the TOPIC SOUTH AFRICA not communication
Keep smiling
Ed

I'm going to agree with both confused and Diesel. I think it would be better if we keep to the community guidelines. I wouldn't wish it upon any of you guys to get reported. My mother tongue is Afrikaans and I'll answer questions in Afrikaans when required. Let's make it a place for all of us to hang out and let's not argue about language.

Sorry, Diesel!
