A tendon is connective tissue which acts like a rope holding muscles to bones. It can stretch and flex, and is protected by a sheath. Tendons don't have a direct blood supply, so it is difficult for an injured tendon to heal, and injured tendons hurt a great deal. Tendons cause muscles to contract, and like muscles work in opposite pairs.

Everyone has giving some excellent answers. The various sports boots or even polo wraps *will* help support the tendons WHEN USED CORRECTLY. But I have seen so many poorly polo wrapped or ill fitting sports boots that can actually damage the tendons. If used properly, they will also protect the leg from injury from being struck by the opposite leg. I always use some sort of protection on my horse's when I am doing events at speed or with a lot of turns (roping, spinning, barrel racing, etc). But I prefer for my horses to not use them on simply trail rides. That way the tendons/muscles don't weaken by being used to the extra support the boots can offer. good luck and have fun

Tendons are strong fibrous nerves that act like steel ropes to attach muscles to bones so as to enable them to shrink and elongate the muscles while in movement . They are also acting like the cables that supply the muscle fibres with electricity to create the biochemical reactions to casue the muscles expand and shrink according to the the commands of the brain so that the limbs can be bent , folded and stretched to enable movements.

describing in simple terms, tendons are the tissues which connect muscles to bones, just as ligaments connect bones to bones.
