The general rule is 4 cm, but there are exceptions. 4 cm is usually the earliest you can get it, and they won't give it to you past 8 cm, but they will usually let you decide where, in between those 2 points, you want it.
When I got close to my due date, my doctor asked me how long I wanted to wait before I got an epidural, and I said " The Admissions desk." He told me I had to wait to at least 4 cm, BUT it took me about 12 hours to get from 1cm to between 2 and 3 cm, and my body was in so much pain that it was shutting down and i wouldn't dilate any more. Then, my doctor decided to give me the epidural before I hit 3 cm. Once my body relaxed, it was only another 3 hours before I was ready to push.
So, like I said, there are exceptions, but those decisions are usually made in the delivery room, not in planning ahead. So, plan on 4 cm being your minimum - once you hit that, the doctor should give it to you of you ask for it. Good Luck!!!

While epidurals are a wonderful aid to moms, do be aware that the earlier you ask for one the greater the chance that it will inhibit labor contractions which then leads then to the administration of contraction enhancing hormones. This routine usually lengthens the labor instead of shortening it and must be monitored very carefully as it can increase the chance of distress in the baby. The baby is usually monitored by attaching an internal wire to the baby's head (it doesn't hurt the baby) and thus, along with the external monitor attached to your belly may limit the positions that you can use during your labor to stay more comfortable or to help move the baby down into the pelvis. (The further down the baby moves the more you dilate-it works hand-in-hand.)
You may want to ask your doc about pre-epidural medications that will relax you and take the edge off of your contractions. These medications do not hurt the baby and help you relax and/or sleep, which actually enhances labor so that it moves along and a good pace.

Is there a place interior the transport room that your mom must be without getting interior the way that should appease every physique? while my older sister had my nephew she did no longer elect us interior the room because of the fact she did no longer elect us to work out something. yet he develop into the 1st and we've been rather excited and surely had to be in there. while she finally began pushing there develop right into a curtain (like in maximum wellbeing facility rooms) so we've been status merely interior the door and could no longer see something, yet shall we pay attention what develop into occurring. they did no longer even understand we've been interior the room till after he develop into born and at that element no one rather cared anymore. yet we've been given to pay attention his first cry and see him get wiped clean up and each little thing. i think of it is going to be your determination as to who's interior the room, yet bear in innovations, that's his toddler, too. it relatively is an exceedingly particular 2nd between the two one in all you and if he feels your mom ought to get interior the way of that attempt to come across a compromise that every physique can stay with.

I had my epidural as soon as the first contraction had hit...I was induced, and didn't get past 1 cent. I was given the oxytocin, and as soon as the first contraction hit, they gave me the epidural because I was petrified of the pain

I got mine at 5 cm because that's when I asked for it. My nurse told me that's the optimal time to put one in, but she didn't say why.
