No. Business plan is different from marketing plan, but they are interrelated in the sense that your marketing plan can be detailed writeup of your market analysis in the business plan.

One of the key components of a business plan is Market Analysis, which provides a summary of your typical customers, competitive landscape, market size, and expected market growth. A marketing plan expounds on the market analysis that you have initially thought of in the business plan --

- you will explain why you chose the strategies for reaching your target customers,
- identify target customers clearly to better finetune your advertising and promotion strategies,
- write your positioning statements
- include preliminary budgets and timelines

However, many small businesses simply write the business plan and try to include their marketing plan in it, rather than prepare a separate document.

For small businesses, a business plan and a marketing plan usually have completely different goals. Business plans, while good for any business, usually are created to receive outside funding from investors. Marketing plans, on the other hand, are usually created when launching a new product. Business plans will usually have a summary of the information contained in the marketing plan, but not all the details on implementing the marketing plan.

Watch video 1 of my 3-part video series. It explains how a marketing plan is part of a business plan. The video lets you examine my business plan on a page-by-page basis -- you'll actually be able to see what my marketing plan looks like.

Marketing plan is part of your business plan. A business plan covers
things like cashflow projection, objectives, key performance indicators, goals, human resources (that's too long to mention all. It depends on what type of business you are talking about and who is preparing it). I suggest you google on business plan and find some samples.

You will need to analyze the segements and determine where there is an opportunity in the market. By opportunity, I mean segment that has an unmet need. The target market is just the name for the segment you intend to focus on. The next step is to develop a strategy to provide a product/service to this target market's unmet needs.
