My sister is a very successful senior civil engineer and has never had any problems. In fact it is quite the opposite and has been recognized on several occasions of her achievements.

BTW - Her boss is a female and at a very high level of a very well-known international company.

I'm a woman civil engineer and I have never experianced any gender bias. I think that times have changed and that men accept women as equals in the workplace. Of course there are the women who take constant phone calls from their children while at work and allow that to distract from working time, these women are usually not promoted as often as a male or female co-worker who is not fielding child-issues all day. Like anything else, I think if you make an effort you will not be passed over for promotions and such.

I think it's great. This year, as a girl scout leader, we are being asked by th American Society For Engineering Education to ask our older Girl Scouts ages 14-17 to consider a career in engineering. I think that anyone whether they be man or woman can compete in any field as long as they have knowledge in that area. BTW are you talking about engineering in general or a specific branch of engineering? Architectural and Civil engineering may still be gender biased, but there are many types of engineering that have women equally employed. Aerospace, Agricultural, Bioengineering, Biomedical, Chemical, Computer/Software, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, Materials, Mechanical, Mining, Nuclear, Petroleum, and Systems Engineering, just to name a few, are some of the many choices that someone interested in engineering have.

It is true..Gender bias still occur. A sad fact indeed. 1 rather smart woman engineer I know knew how to work the system. She opened up her own engineering firm and surrounded herself with some equallly qualified men who in turn would do the site inspection, etc. In turn her business flourished. Of course it was not solely because she surrounded herself with intelligent men it really had to do with the way she ran her business. Just an example of how 1 womans determination to succeed in a gender biased society.

As a female engineer I have encountered very little bias in the engineering field. It has been my experience that as long as you can do the job, people are more than happy to work with you.

I definitely suggest being well prepared to attend college and expect a difficult but enjoyable educational experience.

Gender bias still occurs across the board. There are more males than females as lawyers, doctors, engineers, architects. The again, there are still way more women than men who are teachers or nurses. Despite our strides toward gender equality, we're still a long way off.
