Good pick-me-up for Bruins
April 30, 2006

No one would dispute that the Bruins were a disaster in the post-lockout 2005-06 season. One way they plan to right the ship is with the No. 5 overall selection in the draft, which will be held in Vancouver June 24.

Interim general manager Jeff Gorton, who is coordinating the club's preparation for the draft, believes the Bruins can get an impact player with the pick, if they decide to keep it. He wouldn't rule out trying to make a deal to move up, either. ''Our guys pretty much agree on who are the top five guys," said Gorton. ''Just in a different order, but we'll get through that process. The top five guys, at least in the Bruins' eyes, have separated themselves from the rest of the field.

''There are quite a few guys after that who are pretty good players, too, but when Columbus won that game in overtime against Dallas and moved us into the top five, our guys were really excited because we'd have the opportunity to get one of those five."

Gorton wouldn't tip his hand in terms of who the five are, or what positions the team is concentrating on, but it's no secret the Bruins need help at center. Because of that, and because they have several quality defensemen who are up-and-comers, it's likely they'll opt for a pivotman.

The Bruins will learn more about the top prospects during a combine in Toronto May 30-June 3. The testing, which will include medical exams and fitness drills but no on-ice work, will feature 70 of the top North American skaters and nine goaltenders, as well as the top 36 European prospects.

The scouting staff already has a grasp of the players' on-ice abilities and will round that out with off-ice aspects of their makeup.

''First, you get the one-on-one with the players," said Gorton. ''You ask a lot of questions and you see how the kids react and see how they handle certain situations. Then, the testing, how they've matured physically and how they compete in some of the exercises.

''You get a whole snapshot of what the kid is like off the ice. You take it back to your group and try to figure it out with the information you already have from what he's like on the ice."

Of the 115 invitees to the combine, Gorton estimated that the Bruins would meet with 50-75 of them. When asked about personality, Gorton said it figures into the equation.

''It doesn't count as much as what he can do on the ice," he said. ''First and foremost, can he play and what kind of player is he going to be? But then, yeah, you have to take into account a lot of different things, and one of them is personality: What kind of kid is he and is he going to be a worker? Is he going to be a good team guy?Continued...

Marc Savard was a key pickup for the playoffless Bruins. He is an exciting player to watch. Great hands!

Dont get your hopes up about Savard. He's due for a major let down this season. What, he had 97 points last year, you say? Sure, he was playing with Marion Hossa and Ilya Kovulchuck. He's not going to get the same support from Sturm and Boyes. It's going to be another rough year again in ole' bean town.

Macr Savard, Tukka Raska(sp?), Bobby Allen, Wade Brookbank, Chris Collins, Paul Mara, and others. It's pretty much a NEW team.

Donavon signed as a free agent (played in calgarylast season)
Savard signed as a free agent (played in Atlanta last season)
those are the only big names that i can think of at this point.
Interesting sidenote, both of those players are former Flames. Kinda weird.
