Get into your YM on the upper part "messenger" and click on preferences. Get in to alert and sound. So simple.

Assuming you are using Yahoo e-mail, the email program itself does not give alarms. But if you have Yahoo Messenger running, it will give email alerts.
If you are using a different email system, repost with the system and someone can help you. It is different with every email program.

If you use yahoo mail, best thing is to install yahoo messenger and set its preference to notify you of the arrival of new messages. (Preferences-->alerts and sounds-->Alert when I receive mail).
Other types of mails will have different settings to do the same. See under their preferences or option settings.
Good luck.

Incredimail is great!!And it is free or you can choose to be a Premium or Gold Member.
You can choose a notifier, such as a Butler etc.
It can be set to check email from every minute or longer periods.
