A system that 'jerks' is trying to do too many things at once. Check to see what you have running. Look down on the task bar (beside the clock). Right click on each icon and close it if you don't need it.

Some good housekeeping would be to delete temp internet files (open a browser, click on Tools / Intenet Options and then clear internet history and temp files)

Do a "Disk Cleanup" Start/programs/accessories/System Tools / Disk Clean up. Check everything EXCEPT compress old files.

Do a disk defragmenter Start/programs/accessories/System Tools / Disk Defragmentation. You might want to do this at bedtime - let it run all night (It won't hurt a thing)

good luck
You might want to think of more RAM (easily installed)

Clean out your cookies and temporary files. Delete any file that you are not using. If that doesn't work, back everything up and reformat your drives. If that doesn't work, it might be time to buy a newer computer. Try getting a refurbished Mac; they are super fast and last quite a while. Plus a refurb is way cheaper than a new one.

This problem occurs when you've used you a lot of your computer's memory so clean it up, not literally but free up some of the hard drive and if that doesn't work you could buy an external hard drive.

Try to keep only one or two programmes running at a time- eg only one Internet window.
Also clear your temporary internet files, and go through your PC and delete any files, folders or programs you no longer need/use (don't forget to clear from recycling bin!)
You can check your free memory by (varies from system)
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Perfromance.
