Valve cover gaskets fit between the valve cover (on top of the engine) and the cylinder head (middle of the engine). It's purpose is to keep a tight seal between the two and prevent oil from seeping out. A failed gasket will at least let some oil out creating a smokey smelly mess. If it lets enough oil out, you may run the risk of spilt oil catching fire. Using your car with too little oil and / or inadequate oil pressure can cause major engine damage.
Replacing this gasket on most cars is quite easy and inexpensive. Its not a very serious problem as long as it gets taken care of soon.

The valve cover gasket keeps oil from leaking out. If it is cracked, oil will leak out. Replacing it is not a big job.

It provides a seal for the valve cover pan. If it's cracked then you will have an oil leak. This messy and smelly. It would be wise to replace it if its cracked.

If you could buy a book that could foretell the future thousands of years in advance, if you could buy the most popular book ever written, if you could buy a copy of the first book ever written, if you could buy a book that told you how to farm, how to have faith, how to live and not die, how to love and not hate, how to be healed and not be lame, wouldn't that not only be a book worth buying, but worth reading, studying and learning? You could also think of it as a picture album of the Son of God. The thing is if I showed you a picture album of my son and you were disinterested, I would stop showing you the pictures. That is the same way with the Word of God. If you are not interested, God will not show you the pictures of His son. Just getting through The Book to say you read it, will not impress Him. It will not please Him. Looking for His Son will please Him. And He will show you His Son.

To add on to the previous answer, if it is a bad enough oil leak. it can ignite eventually causing the engine compartment to catch fire, I learned this one the hard way. But it is very easily fixed.

it could leak oil. and if it does that, chances are that oil is going to end up on your exhaust manifold. which means your going to smell oil burning.
