The rainbow flag is symbol of diversity and it is not ONLY used by the GLBT culture. The use of 'rainbow' flags has a long tradition; they are displayed in many cultures around the world as a sign of diversity and inclusiveness, of hope and of yearning. This denotation goes back to the rainbow as a symbolic promise, and the use of all the colors of the rainbow symbolises all flags in one.

There are several, unrelated rainbow flags in use today. The rainbow flag representing gay pride just happens to be the most widely recognized. The 'rainbow' peace flag is especially popular in Italy. There are also other, less well known 'rainbow' flags of a similar design, used for different purposes.

I'd heard the Stonewall origins too - for a long time. Then, I attended a Pride function a few years ago and the PRIDE FLAG was then attributed to artist Gilbert Baker, of San Francisco - who hand-dyed the flag back in 1978, flewn in the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade on June 25th.

In checking the website of the Stonewall Society, they also credit Baker and further said: "For the 1979 Parade, Baker went to the San Francisco Paramount Flag Co. to mass-produce the Rainbow Flag. At that time hot pink was not available commercially. So pink and turquoise were removed and royal blue replaced indigo. This six-color version became the widely recognized symbol for Gay Pride and diversity. It is officially recognized by the International Congress of Flag Makers.

1978. The "first openly gay guy elected to any significant political workplace contained in the heritage of the planet" became Harvey Milk, who grew to develop right into a San Francisco city manager in 1978. An artist chum of Milk's, Gilbert Baker, designed the Rainbow Flag for San Francisco's gay Freedom Day Parade that year. After Milk became assassinated later that year, the Rainbow Flag began to be utilized in San Francisco as a standard image of the gay community and this is use finally spread around the international. The flag initially had 8 stripes with the colour pink signifying sexuality, pink signifying existence, orange signifying healing, yellow signifying solar, eco-friendly signifying nature, indigo signifying magic, blue signifying serenity, & violet signifying spirit. The gay delight flag at present contains six stripes of pink, Orange, Yellow, eco-friendly, Blue, and Violet.

each colors has a meaning....

Meaning of the colors
Like the rainbow, this flag is a symbol of hope and peace. The six colors from flags around the world fly in harmony. Each of the six colors in the co-operative flag have been assigned the following meaning:

red stands for courage;

orange offers the vision of possibilities;

yellow represents the challenge that GREEN has kindled;

green indicates a challenge to co-operators to strive for growth of membership and of understanding of the aims and values of co-operation;

dark blue suggests pessimism: a reminder that less fortunate people have needs that may be met through the benefits of co-operation;

violet represents warmth, beauty, and friendship.

I've heard it comes from Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition back in the 70's. This was a very inclusive political movement and the gay community rapidly accepted the flag as its own...

Judy Garland (who sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow) was a huge gay rights activist. The day of her funeral a bunch of homosexual's were mourning at a bar in NY called Stonewall. Police and a bunch of heterosexual bigots started trouble with the homosexuals which started the Stonewall riots. Since than the rainbow has become a symbol of gay pride because of Judy's death it was the first major gay movement.

A rainbow contains all the primary colors. From it you can mix and make all colors. This is a symbol that idealizes diversity, and GLBT people support diversity.

Oh, and it's pretty, and the Judy Garland thing fits right into all of that!

The rainbow flag logo
means diversity, ho.

I think that the rainbow should have eight colors on it:
red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, indigo, and violet

'cause we thought of it first.
the bands of color indicate the different people that make up the human rainbow. so it indicates both GLBT and straight folks. and heck, asexuals too. maybe if we made it clear that straight folks are included in our rainbow, they'd relax a little.
