You need to download it from the internet. It is free and you can make copies of it for free. I endorce it and it is perfectly safe.

Linux is free so you won't find it most stores. I would suggest you check out this site for Ubuntu Linux. You can download a copy or you can do a simple online registration and they will send you up to 5 free copies.

The nice thing about Ubuntu is you don't have to install it to use it. They call it a "live CD" which means you can run the entire operating system from the CD. If you like it, you can use the same CD to install it on your hard drive. But if you use it from the CD, nothing on your hard drive will be affected.

It is very similar to Windows and most people can jump right in and use it immediately. And that's another nice thing about Ubuntu. It has real good support and the user forums are great.

For desktop pc's all Linux distributions are free! In general you'll have to pay in case you want the original cd or dvd with the installation package sent to your home (this way you'll also receive full support for it) (this is not in general, for example Ubuntu now ships for free cd's and dvd's).
Linux isn't free for enterprise desktop PC's (for example SUSE, Red Hat,BSD)!
