This is an old euphemism and rarely used today. My Father used that term and would be close to 90 if he were alive today.
It was used when he grew up, so he used the term, too. I do not believe I have ever said it.

Maybe the same reason we call a hooker/prostitute's "client" a john!

I don't. I just refer to the general area as, "the bathroom".
