You can sing anything you want - even make up your own song or words to a song you don't know. I even make songs out of what I am doing around the house. Repetitive words and rhyming are good for this age. Also, if you can make up hand gestures to go along with the song, that will help them understand the meaning of the words in the song, like itsy bitsy spider. My daughter never gets tired of that song. Topchamp2 mentioned some good songs. You can do a google search for lyrics for nursery rhymes.

This is an excellent question. 9 months is a great age to start doing songs and finger plays with infants. There are many sites, TV shows, videos, infant groups, etc to help with which songs. Hold your baby on your lap and gently guide hand over hand for the gestures for the songs. This helps so much with language development as well as fine and Gross motor development. One site to check is www.perpetualpreschool.com. You can also look at Barney or Wiggles videos/DVDs. many libraries also have good toddler book/song programs. Some of my favorite songs are:
Twinkle, Twinkle
Old MacDonald
Mr. Sun
Open, Shut Them
Eeensy Weeensy Spider
Wheels on the Bus
You can also try with baby on his/her back and move legs for gestures in songs.
When my baby was an infant we went to baby gymboree classes and they had wonderful song/gesture ideas. You may still be able to get their song DVDs for ideas.
Try using the gestures in these songs to build communication skills for your baby.

You could sing anything. My boyfriend's daughter started walking at 9 1/2 months and she loved the hokey pokey especially with the Elmo doll.

Sing and be silly! My son loved things that made him anticipate the outcome.Just making my fingers walk across the floor real fast and jump on his belly would cause hysterical laughing.Hiding objects and playing peek-a-boo are great too.

A child likes songs that are repetitive like to get them to learn how to sign and work with their hand sing row your boat and do hand motions with their hands while you sing to them that way they understand both concepts and it give them the chance to play with you at the same time, teach your child how to kick by kicking a ball to them or giving them a ball to throw that way you are not only playing but you are also working with the physical skills and letting them learn something new but fun

You can absolutely sing anything you want. Babies love music. But if you want to get your baby involved, sing twinkle twinkle (with the hand gestures), itsy bitsy spider, and head shoulders knees and toes.
