SETI does not send messages into space. They listen for radio signals from space. There have been projects in the past that sent messages, but very little is intentionally sent.

A mathematical message could contain a great deal about physics, chemistry, logic, and even the designs of technical devices and chemical compounds. You can even put blueprints, photographs, sound clips, and any other sort of data that you can imagine into a mathematical message. The problem is deciding what is relevant or will convey a useful message.

I'm not certain what would say the most about us - the contents of a message or the fact that we sent a message at all. This is a difficult question no matter how you look at it.

Perhaps my message would simply outline our biochemistry and tell them something about our planet. Ask yourself what you would want to know about aliens and their world, and that might be the most sensible message content. It would certainly be interesting.

Strictly speaking, SETI isn't sending messages at all. They are only listening for messages with radio telescopes.

There have been a number of spacecraft that carried message disks, but these are not really SETI disks. They would have to be physically picked up by aliens to be read, and since none of these space craft will ever reach another star, that is unlikely. When I say never reach, I mean that they are not heading toward any particular star, so the odds of reaching one instead of just flying forever without ever getting close to any star are very high. In addition, they are going so slowly that they will be closer to the Sun than any other star for tens of thousands of years at least.

The massage is hello in most or all the languages in the world and it says something about (Mankind) which I think is wrong is should read (Humankind) because there are women on our world as well. The massage is an invitation to come to our world. I think it makes us vulnerable. Any alien that might take us up on the offer.

They DID send a message a very long time ago -- and a VERY primitive one, at that! It was only about a quarter of a kilobyte in length, and the layman looking at it wouldn't know what the heck he was looking at unless you spelled it out for him.

In fact, the scientist who concocted the message sent copies of it to his colleagues in its "raw" format -- just a bunch of blips and spaces, and none of them could decipher it, either. Once they were told that it had to be formatted into a grid of the proper size, THEN they got it and thought it was very clever.....So who knows? We could potentially be bombarded by alien signals day and night, and simply don't have the frame of reference needed to interpret them....
