Wow.... that's a really good and tough question...
To be honest with you I don't think any one knows the absolutely certain answer to this question and I sure don't think I do.
I do hope that I succeed in my life and I will do my best and use all the hints and tips I might get but I'm not sure if I know the absolute way that to succeed that is true about every one and there is no discussion upon it.

first thing: a good mind. that means intelligence, the ability to learn from experience, the ability to conceive of things in different ways, the ability to discern and make distinctions, the ability to deliberate well and make good decisions.
next: a good attitude. you have to believe in yourself, you have to have hope (not unrealistic expectations), and you have to be willing to put in a lot of work. probably a sense of humour is part of a good attitude, too.
next: you need to be able to get along with others. i know it's been said before, but "no man is an island" -- you don't succeed at life without the help of others. getting along isn't as easy as it sounds; it takes understanding, compassion, sympathy, and good judgment.
If you have all these things, then you have a chance to succeed at life. If you do not have them, all your other successes will be of limited value. You might be rich, but depressed. You might be healthy but foolish. You might be popular but have no real friends.
But, even if you have all the necessary things, that still might not be enough to succeed. For one thing, you will need a fair bit of luck to succeed at life. The attributes above will help you to take advantage of fortune when it comes your way, and they will help you to mitigate bad fortune, but without some measure of luck, you probably won't lead a really happy life.
You will also need good health, and at least a moderate income. To live with sickness, pain, or weakness diminishes life considerably, and poverty is a hard condition to bear (read George Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London"), especially if you have all the attributes above.
So it seems you need: good intellect, good character, luck, health and moderate wealth. If you have all these, you will be "successful" at life; if you don't have them, you probably won't be a complete "success".

Focus...to be able to visualize what success is.
Hard work...to be able to work towards bringing that visualization into a reality.
Resilience...to be able to handle the pitfalls that are bound to occur at some point.
Humility...to be able to accept success when it does come and not be arrogant about it.

It takes patience, perseverance, determination, commitment in everything you do and settling for nothing but the best.
But I also agree with the "3Ds" outlined by breastcanceraware.
