Yes that is against the law, trust me I managed a store before, you have to be getting paid or you can not work! You need to run now, you will be taken advantage of in this company. I think you should tell the manager if you want the job that is, I will call the Labor board and approve that I can work without getting paid. And see how high they jump at that time.

I wouldn't work for the hotel, but if you are stuck working for this place you might check to see if there is a federal labor law poster in the break room. These are supposed to be placed in a visible location. This might have some answers regarding labor law.
Unfortunately Mississippi doesn't have a minimum wage law, but that still doesn't mean they can treat you like you're in a third world country.
Good luck to you and I hope you find better employment soon.

Mississippi has very poor worker rights laws. It is an "at-will-employement' state as well. In other words, there is no implied contract just because you were hired.
However, if he did not tell you, or he has paid others for their first 3 days of work, then you can contact the Department of Labor and they will force him to pay you for those 3 days. But if it really is a policy that he applies to everyone, then, YES, he can do it.

there are a few laws that might apply, but you have to talk to him and make sure exactly what the future pay rate might be and how it relates to your 3 day training. no, he can't ask you to work "off the clock" but he can pay a training wage of around $4/h and maybe 1 week of training wage would be the same as 3 days unpaid. but letting him know now that you know better will put you in the position in the future.

If you agree to do it you must. Otherwise he is not obligated to hire you. If you really want the job then do the training. He is most likely wanting to see how good of worker you will be before going through the expense of putting you on the payroll. He is probably doing this due to past experiences with lazy good for nothings who left after they actually had to start doing the work on their own. I work in the state employment office and if I were you I'd keep the job, things are tough out there.

You won't be paid because you'll be TRAINING. There's a reason that "training" and "working" mean completely different things. You're talking about labor laws like you're being worked to death for no pay. You have to know how to do the job before you can expect to be paid for it.

yes he can do this. when it comes to training your employer doesn't have to pay you. thats why you will notice that some jobs specify if it's paid training before you get hiried.
