This day has a deep and profound meaning for all of us who went through it but I have honestly been taken aback by many many of the reactions I've seen in people who were not directly affected by this storm. We have repaired our clocks, cleaned up the mess and are looking to the future on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We feel closer as a community and try to support one another because we have A LOT of change to adjust to.

I am always surprised at the depth of compassion people show us and also at the occasional raw condemnation and hatred shown. My question--Why did this event move so many people so much, for good and for bad?

I feel like I must absolve people of their guilt sometimes when I am talking to them (people from outside).

I have lived in Florida for 45 + years. I understand what you are saying! They are surprised that we are still cleaning up from the 4 we had the year before K. Guess what I am expecting at least a STORM this evening or early in the A.M. We are ready so we should be safe maybe! I think it is a combination of things. First they are scared it could happen to them, and second It is truly overwhelming. Just to much to handle!

Maybe it's that it hit so close to home. Many of us have been to Mississippi or Louisiana, know people there, or even have family there. This isn't something happening somewhere half a world away--you're part of us. And the idea that there are still places a year later that haven't been helped after all they've been through makes us angry that our government won't fulfill its obligations. When you hear that the director of FEMA clamly went on eating his fancy dinner when reports came in about Katrina, how could you not be outraged?

While it was a sad and horrific event in American history, it was beat to death by the media. This caused people NOT to give, to grow angry etc etc. Personally I am weary of hearing about it. Too, I am weary of hearing about JonBonet and Iraq and other things as well. Make the news fresh DAILY!

I wish the gvt. would spend at least some of the money they are wasting in Iraq on rebuilding our own country, on helping our own people re establish their lives.
