it all started with Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution. "Evolution means that human being development was no longer fixed and certain, but could change and evolve or degenerate into an unknown future, possibly a bleak future that clashes with the analogy between evolution and civilisation as a progressive positive direction." The irrationality of human beings, mainly portrayed through the World Wars, contributed to the growing fear of the downward spiral into barbarity and chaos. In a nutshell, the major source of distress was the possibility that a segment of the society might actually revert to a former state of being; one less civilised than the standards of the day would permit.
