Asking is a passive action, whilst searching is an active one.
Sometimes it is easier to passive (a.k.a lazy).

That came to my mind too. But I think it happen for several reasons.
1. They do not know how to use a search engine properly and effetely. For instance, a complex search with special options like URL, SITE, etc
2. They do not get an elaborate answer for their questions. For instance, the step by step answers.
3. Searching through Google or Yahoo will lead them to commercial products when they need a more general answers
4. No points are given for choosing the best answer :)

Because most of the time when you do a search you end up with multiple possible answers to the question that may differ greatly in the answers. When you ask here you may get lucky enough that someone has experienced what you are going through and can give you the straight simple solution instead of the convoluted one.
