I read another q/a that gave some home remedies for common aches and sicknesses, but I remember getting a forwarded email that told me Gatorade was good not for headaches, but for sore throats.

I can't find anything on the internet to justify this, any doctors or just anyone out there who can support my thinkings? My daughter doesn't want to swallow anything mixed with vinegar.

Or any other good home remedies?

gargling with salt water can temporarily help. warm liquids such as tea work great for soothing sore throats as well-i like the peppermint flavor w/some honey the best...

gatorade helps more with restoring fluid and electrolyte levels in the body due to dehydration from excessive sweating, diarrhea, and vomiting..

i don't know your daughter's age but ibuprofen works great to relieve pain and swelling. if she's age 16-adult she can take the adult tablets. 200-400mg every 6 hours but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours..

if she's a child-the suspension liquid works best (no more than 4 doses in 24 hours)

ages 2-3 years 1tsp every 6 hours
ages 4-5years 1.5 tsp every 6 hours
ages 6-8 years 2tsp every 6 hours
ages 9-10 2.5tsp every 6 hours
ages 11 and up 3tsp every 6 hours

she can also suck on sore throat drops or ice....

the following are signs of strep throat and if she presents these she'll need to be seen within 24 hours by her doc to get antibiotics-it's highly contagious as well..

-severe sore throat causing her to not be able to swallow anything
-white patches on back of throat
-fever of 101 or higher ( in children usually 103+)
-nausea and sometimes vomiting

i hope she gets to feeling better soon

Gatorade may be helpful in order to keep fluids in her system, but is usually for when you have diarreha/vomiting because it contains electrolytes (sodium/potassium) when the body starts to dehydrate.

Here's some tips to help ease sore throats (from the website below). I don't think she would need to drink anything mixed with vinegar.

For minor symptoms:
# Gargle with warm salt water to soothe throat
# Take pain relievers: ibuprofen, aspirin, acetaminophen (do not use aspirin for children under 16)
# Use throat lozenges
# Increase fluids

See your health care clinician if:
# Sore throat lasts more than a week.
# Fever accompanies the sore throat.
# You have difficulty swallowing, breathing or speaking.
# There are white patches on back of throat or tonsils.
# You have been exposed to someone diagnosed with strep throat.
# You have tender neck lymph nodes

I have also found that my daughter likes frozen fruit pops when she has a sore throat - it is cooling and gets liquid into her system. Good luck and I hope your daughter feels better!!

I'm not sure about Gatorade but gargle with warm salt water and that should help. You may have to do it once or twice for a few days. That and soup/chicken broth. 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon salt dissolved in an 8-ounce glass of warm water. It always helps my sore throats. Feel better! Tori

If its your daughter and she begins to run a fever, it may be strep and can be dangerous if left untreated. However if its just sore throat try having her gargle salt water, 1 cup w/ 1 tsp of salt a couple times a day see if that helps but only to relieve the pain. There are no remedies I don't believe that can cure a sore throat that comes with a virus, like a common cold it takes time for the body to work it off, just try and take care of the pain until then.

The only effect on a sore throat Gatorade might have is fluid replenishment which means your throat would not be dry. Topical treatments such as choraceptic spray, Sucrets's lozenges, etc are good. Any over-the-counter pain meds like Tylenol or Advil will relieve your discomfort. Be sure to see a doctor if it persists or if you are unable to swallow without significant pain.

Vinegar sounds like it would be tough to swallow...Gatorade is not good for sore throats but I suppose drinking anything would be soothing as long as it is not too hot or cold. I don't think your daughter needs to swallow any vinegar concoctions for a sore throat. They can be caused by a postnasal drip from allergies (take antihistamine) or strep infection (see a doctor).

No. Gatorade, or other sugary drinks, can actually make sore throats last longer. You are essentially 'feeding' all the nasty bacteria, and helping them reproduce. Remember that all energy drinks are LOADED with sugar---they have even more than regular soft drinks.
I used to get tonsillitis all the time, and the best pain relief I ever found was gargling several times a day with warm, salty water. The salt makes the bacteria pop open, and every time you gargle you kill bazillions of them.

Punching someone really hard in the Adam's apple is a good way to make them have a sore throat.
