You're making me feel old again (Although I guess not so bad--only Groucho was still alive when I was born). I have at least one of their movies at home, and I watch them on AMC or Turner Classic Movies when I get the chance. I especially like Harpo. I read a biography of one of his neighbors, who said he was really a very well-educated person, and often played the harp for them. Groucho was the tough one, from what I've seen. One time the studio which produced Casablanca tried to sue him for doing A Night in Casablanca, but he countered by reminding them that there really is such a place, and they didn't own the name of it. They made A Night in Casablanca because of Chico's gambling habits--he was in over his head, and the people he owed were threatening to kill him. I've never heard that much about Gummo and Zeppo, but I do know one of them left to become the group's manager. I've also heard that most of what you see on screen is just made up--they rarely stuck to the script, no matter how much the director tried to keep them in line.

They were a complex bunch - - - it was funny to watch them but apparently painful to know them - - - they came from dirt poor immigrant stock and had to fight & claw their way out of the ghetto, they did this through music and when that did not pay enough, comedy. Working in various combinations with others and each other in Vaudville they finally 'clicked' on Broadway during the 1920's which allowed them to bridge the Great Depression. Their Movie Heyday, 1928 thru 1934, arguably, coincided with their disillusionment with working with each other and with the very real fact that they were getting old by the standards of the times, Groucho was in his mid forties and Chico was even older. Groucho true name Julius wasn't truly happy until he was a solo performer on radio in the late 40's and television in the 50's. Chico true name Leonard was the original slacker - - - he hated to work, he prefered a good game of c r a p or a day at the races. He worked to support his habits which included casual gal pals. Harpo true name Arthur was the most devoted Family man, he enjoyed performing for the sake of performing and was truly hurt by Groucho's attitude. Zeppo true name Herbert & Gummo true name Milton were mere footnotes to history - - Gummo dropped out early and lived a long healthy happy life away from the spotlight. Zeppo was actually quite talented & handsome and conceivably could have carved out a bigger niche for himself, but he disliked any thought of competing with Groucho, and developed a hatred for Holywood that drove him to become a ruthless agent for a variety of actors writers etc. The Marx Brothers were truly one of a kind and no one has duplicated their style of humor. Peace.

Chico, Harpo, Groucho, Gummo, Zeppo Marx. I do not remeber seeing Gummo in any of the movies but to me they where geniuses in what they did best, making people laugh durning the depression era. My favorite moivies where:

Duck Soup
Horse Feathers
Room Service
A Day at the Races.

George S Kaufman wrote some of the funniest dialog ever, and Groucho delivered it!! Harpo was the greatest silent comedian of all, Buster Keaton was close, and Chaplin. The scene in the ocean liner cabin
rivals "Caddyshack!"
Just brilliant! And those guys had some women!!!

Hilarity. Many of their skits are timeless.
What they used to do (do a play before a movie to work out the kinks) is not happening anymore.
Too bad, as many movies could use a few "run throughs" before actual filming.
