Wintering over any plants in pots is a challenge. In severe freezing zones, the Plants roots have a tendancy to dry out because the humidity is so low, and watering after the soil is frozen is difficult, obviously. Usually for success you have to put them on the ground in the shade and cover the pot with mulch to conserve the moisture, plus adding snow on top will also insulate & when it melts will water the soil.

Hey, I know what you mean. Ferns have to be misted every day. Anyway, I have the perfect hanging basket for you. It is called "wandering jew." It is purple in color, and doesn't need a whole lot of water, but please, do water at least once a week. You can also just take a piece of it and put it in the ground and it will grow really quickly. Just plain "Airplane plants" are another good one. They take the heat well and also make little baby "airplanes" that can be placed in the ground as well. They are green and white striped. I don't know the official name but a nursery will know what you mean by airplane plants. Best of luck in selling your home. You could also buy a couple of inexpensive plastic pots and put petunias in. They love the sun. Just keep them watered and pull off the blooms once they have completed the blooming. You will get a whole lot of flowers out of them.

Depend a lot in what planting region you are living! Use a good potting soil and a slow release fertilizer. Make sure you choose a plant that can be in full shade and semi-shade. A good nursery in your area can help in deciding which one is best for your space.

To my knowledge there is no permanent plant for a hanging basket that stays outdoors, but if you want one to come in for the winter, it will be okay...Also, if you could let us know your location, it would help tremendously...

Winter flowering pansies immediately spring to mind, actually they will flower throughout the year and are only slightly knocked back in a very severe frost. Variegated Ivy for colourful foliage.
