Well it's not only America that should be worrying, a country with 1.4 billion people and climbing rapidly is just going to suck the worlds resources dry not just for the US but everybodys and in the process dumping hugh amounts of polution into the environment because their environmental controls are basically non existant, so all of this glee that the US isn't going to be #1 any more should be #1 on alot of other peoples list of concerns. What is the impact going to be on the third world when the US stops foreign aid? well we'll just see what all these people get from China; a whole bunch of not much I'm betting, then what. So before everybody gets to happy about it try thinking past the next 5 minutes and maybe you'll see a different story. But then again I doubt it.

I guess the only way WE can cope is to abolish Democracy, Censor the press, Ban the right of Free Speech, Ban the right to Assembel and have peacefull protests, force women to have their "tubes tied" after having two children(you know, to control population), support countries that only help us, reguardless of their radical views of genocide and world domination, "Fix" government elections, hold political "undesireables" in prison without the right of Due Process, Ignore the Geneva Convention, Shoot down Any aircraft, anywhere, and call it "our airspace",and my favorite, make Cheap crap that doesnt work! Hey tough guy, I seem to recall that the Empire of Japan ( now an ally and friend of the United States of America) gave China a costly lesson in numbers in 1939.Remember? So do the math, leave Taiwan Alone, and Learn from the United States; WE fought for what we have, dont hate us for that!

I guess the Americans will stop doing "management" and "investment" and start doing some real work again. Why, as an industrialized country, don't we have a machine able to make T-shirts faster and cheaper than the workers in China?

As a non-American, I really don't care about America coping with being second best, but I can see that this will be better for the rest of the world, which I really care about as I am part of it.
Having a uni-polar world (after the collapse of Soviet Union) is not for anybody's favor except Americans which is not fair for the rest of the world. Though as individual, I prefer capitalism, having opposing power would create more balanced world.

Your own question tells of the demise of China. "China is growing so quickly" that they cannot compensate for the social upheaval that is happening as they cut from a centralized economy to a market economy. I'll give 'em 10 more years (maybe) and then they will be in trouble.
I know the power will shift, but I don't see it going to China.

More wars!
War is the best counterplot for all problems encountered by US Governments...
All of a sudden problematic situations in Asia will arise that will "force" US Army to intervene in order to preserve "peace, order and ...democracy".
Just like the Crusades did, 500 years ago; they went to save a place they never knew just for the "noble" sake of Christ, but History has proved their real motives... They wanted to beat the "unfaithfulls" before they invaded Europe.
I really wonder what will US do then, will all these millions of Chinese staying there...

Trust me, before that happens, we will just buy China and rename it Chidaho or Choregon or Chalifornia or Chew York or maybe even Chassachusetts. Or we can rename it Japan II.

Weren't we just having this conversation a couple of years ago regarding the European Union? I hope they do. Then they can stop blaming the US for everything and get in the hot seat themselves.
