My vent free fireplace is actually used for heat. And yes is does have a thermostat. That should be your only problem. Service might be required is not. But if it goes on by itself then it has to have a pilot lite. Meaning a thermostat to turn on and off.

Call the manufacturer and disable it. You dont want your house to burn down. If you hae a remote control for it, you may want to make sure that none of the other remote controlled items in your house are operating on the same frequency. That happened with my dughters fan and we had fun with it for a few weeks until she did not want to sleep in her room because she thought it was haunted. It's still fun to freak her out though.
