because deep down, lots of those men are insecure. They've been brainwashed their whole lives to believe that women need men in order to live "proper" lives.

First of all, not ALL men think this way ;) I do so hope I'm the exception. Secondly, some people are arseholes and not just to lesbians either. I don't believe in passionate love because it's fickle just like sex. Don't get me wrong I like sex :D, but it the long run I'd like a good companion who is gentle and understanding and I believe that lesbians share this kind of love

Many times it is little more than arrogance. They seem to think that they are whomevers gift to women and simply can't believe that a woman wouldn't be attracted to them. Best part, they also react extremely negatively toward gay men because they just "know" the gay guy wants them. The next time you hear it, offer to set them up with a gay guy and watch their face. It usually tends to shut them right up.

Some men think this way, because to them it is a form a rejection, when the feel intimidated, they speak out with hostility. Women do the same thing with gay men. I have done it, but mine wasn't done out of feeling rejected by the opposite sex, I was actually just joking around, because no matter how good one things they are sexually, you can not change another persons sexual preference.
