Clearly, the destruction wasn't as bad as the media led us to believe. After all, if they had time to steal stereos and TV's, they must have already had enough food and shelter.
I can't believe we're still paying to support these freeloaders.

A year after Katrina, it's difficult to believe people are still focused on a few looters and not the depth of devastation of this tragic event. I hope non of you are ever in the same desperate situation as the people you viewed on TV. Deprived of food and water, not knowing if any of your family was alive, and homeless, exactly how would you have navigated through this tragedy? Cameras were not everywhere. They pointed them at what was convenient for them to shoot. Judgment comes so easy for you when you're sitting in your living room, far away from immediate harm. The world would be a better place if your dominate response was empathy instead of judgment.

The smart and moral ones would have. The ones that were stealing electronics and stuff are horrible people that saw an opportunity to try to steal something without getting into too much trouble. It was ridiculous the amount that people used the race card when being portrayed on tv stealing those electronics and stuff. If they were stealing food it wouldn't have been portrayed as bad as it was. You're right. Why do they need a tv or dvd player in a flood? It's sick.

Looting is often opportunistic, the apparent lapse in authority enabling willing persons to thieve with impunity. Looting also cascades through a group of people as one person believes that his contribution to the crime is lessened because someone else is looting. People may also believe that if the goods are not stolen, then they will simply be wasted, and see their act as a lesser of two evils. Finally, a looter may believe that if he doesn't steal the property, it will simply be stolen by someone else and he will gain nothing from his obedience. Looters are usually locals of the site of the disaster, and as such, may have lost a lot of their own property. This further encourages them to steal as it is reducing the negative impact of the disaster.

They were not going to stay there. Most were not from that area and were looking for anything they could sell. Part is the mass hysteria that happens in those kinds of events as well. People do things that make no sense at all.

Human greed knows no boundaries. If a person loots a grocery store and takes foot and other essentials, I can totally understand that. But when they take computers and TVs, that is totally out of line.

Exactly WHAT part of, "there's a huge hurricaine coming, folks - LEAVE AT ONCE!!!" did these people NOT comprehend????
I find it hard to feel sorry for people who KNEW what was coming - for DAYS - and chose to STAY in the path of danger. What is it with this sheep mentality anyway? These are people who are used to having the government support them and spoonfeed them and have so for years. They sat in their freakin' houses for days, knowing a hurricaine was coming right at them, and then had the nerve to b*itch when FEMA wasn't right there the second the storm hit - packing their things up FOR them and moving them to higher ground.
When do ADULTS become responsible for themselves and quit pointing the finger at everyone ELSE because they were too lazy or stupid to fend for themselves and get out of Dodge? Who here in their right mind would STAY in their homes when a HUGE hurricaine was coming RIGHT for them? What part of "get out!" did these people NOT comprehend? Then when it hit, it was everyone ELSE'S fault that they were in trouble.
Yeah, not surprised by the looting at all. That's about the ONLY effort alot of them made when they actually got their lazy butts up off their cots. I watched countless hours of news programs showing these people SITTING AND LAYING AROUND on cots and mats for DAYS - long after the hurricaine had come and gone. Volunteers from all over the country were down there working their butts off trying to bring order to things while able-bodied MEN who had lived there their whole lives laid around crying and moaning that the government wasn't there FAST enough to once again hand them everything. Kind of hard to feel empathy for lazy grown men who just expect everyone ELSE to support them. Sorry, my give-a-damn's broken.
Looting? Not surprised at all. Not in the LEAST.

It just shows the respect for property is not one we are born with. Without society to set the rules, simple people turn to basic instincts very fast. And if the society doesn't recover fast, they are the survivors.
