A Book... write in the front of it and it just may survive until they are old enough to read it to their kids.. and then slide in a toy that goes with the book. being read to is one of the things that my kids love and books do not get broken as fast as today's toys (and do not require batteries)and hopefully it can be a keepsake and become part of your history.

depends on what they are into (music, sports, art, science, computers, taking things apart, any t.v. shows, certain animals etc.) and what your price range is..... give more details and i can give you specific ideas, i have 3 young nephews, 3 step kids and my own daughter plus various other young kids to buy for and i kick butt at present giving! i'd love to help ya out.....
although i will say my fav thing to give is anything NOT a toy. Everybody else will be getting them toys and books and games, i always like to go for the memorable. Every year my 9 year old nephew and i go to toys r us and spend the gift card i get him together and then spend the rest of the day doing whatever he wants (because i have a 2 year old and his lil bro is 2, we never get to spend the day just him and i, so it's nice for us both, can also be as cheap as you need it to be, a $15 gift card and a day at a park or something). My 2 year old nephew just received tickets from me to go see The Doodle Bops-his second fav t.v. show ($14 a ticket!) and a small pull back car of Brum ($10 plus shipping), his number one favorite show (this took extra work because i had to find it online, it's an english show). My daughters bday is sunday and we bought her doodle bops tickets and she is getting her first year of ballet classes for her b-day (and all her ballet paraphenalia, this of course was not a cheap one)
Just use some imagination combined with what you know of the boys!

Legos - keep it simple though...
Software - PC or platform based depending on what they have access to. SpongeBob and Scooby Doo are usually popular..
Bikes
Those replica cars that look like the real thing are always a hit...
