It may be easier to decide on the the greatest writer (there is some consensus about Shakespeare, though not unanimity) but I will tell you a joke: a great British Second World War General, Montogomery, once said, "There have been four great commanders in history: Alexander, Julius Caesar, Napoleon, and me". Montgomery, who knew Eisenhower well, visited the former General and President in Gettysburg and explained to him how he would have won the Civil War battle there sooner. Modesty was hardly one of his virtues.

Has to be General Douglas MacArthur. He's soo great the US gov't took him outta power before the Korean war because he'd probably start a huge general war with the communists.

Plus he ruled over Japan for about 5 years after WWII. He helped to reform some of the rules - 3d's Demoratization, Decentralization, and Demilitarization. This is primarly responsible for what Japan is today - an technological superpower.

The American U.S. Grant is arguably the best general of all time, Just the ability to adapt from Napoleonic tactics to trench warfare was something many generals failed to do even in WW1, the rifled barrel and improved artillery that came into being at that time changed how battles were fought. the ability to tenaciously chase down a foe like R.E.Lee the concept of large armies living off the land and not depending on long vulnerable supply lines. using Sherman and Sheridan to destroy a populaces desire to aid a rebellious army, there a scores of books detailing the genius of Grant.

What is the definition of greatest? Is it land area conquered? Or is it the strongest demonstration of bravery and courage? Or how about he was the best warrior?

I'd think Lu Bu (China) was the best warrior but he was not a superior commander. Alexander and Genghis Khan on par is my answer for capacity of ambitions and also the capability to carry them out, realising them.

Admiral Lord Nelson is the first guy that comes to mind. His fleet of ships defeated the French and Spanish fleets in the battle of Trafalgar.
